Men's Tennis completes Saturday shutout of ranked D2 and D3 foes

#1 CMS Stags Tennis blanked #26 (Division II) Point Loma Nazarene and #37 (Division III) Christopher Newport, as senior Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) was one of five Stags to win three matches on Saturday. Mehall had straight set wins at #4 singles in both dual matches, and partnered junior Max Macey (Wilton, CT) to win at #3 doubles against CNU.

CMS completes a two-day, three match homestand by winning each of their matches 9-0 against ranked opponents. Against PLNU in Saturday's morning dual, the Stags trailed by an early break at each of the top two doubles positions before coming back to win in both. With Macey and partner Julian Gordy (Fr. - Tarzana, CA) winning easily at the #3 spot, CMS took a 3-0 lead into the singles against the Sea Lions. Mehall was the first straight set winner at #4, setting up the clinch by junior Alex Brenner (San Francisco, CA) at the sixth singles position. Both Macey and Gordy needed decisive match tie-break wins at #2 and #3 respectively to complete the win for the Stags and improve their tie-break record to 11-0 on the season.

Against Christopher Newport, CMS split their top two doubles teams and had senior captain Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) partner Glenn Hull (Jr. - Brookings, OR) at #1, while Daniel Morkovine (Jr. - San Carlos, CA) paired up with Lestter Yeh (Sr. - Arcadia, CA) at #2. Both teams started slowly but followed a Macey and Mehall win at #3 with 8-5 wins.

In the singles CMS was dominant from top to bottom. Hull put the Stags up 4-0 with his 6-2, 6-0 win at #1, while Mehall cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at #4 to clinch the match. Yeh and Rohan Shankar (Jr. - San Jose, CA) were next off at #3 and #5, with Morkovine and freshman Freddie Simental (San Bernardino, CA) finishing off the Captains at #2 and #6.

CMS is now 5-0 overall and will travel to La Jolla, CA for the 127th Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, March 4-6. The Stags resume dual match play and begin conference action at home against Caltech on Sunday, March 6 at 2:00 PM.
