Stags Split Final Two in Hawaii

CMS Stags Tennis split matches with Division II opponents Hawaii-Hilo and BYU Hawaii to conclude their Hawaiian trip on Wednesday. Warren Wood (So. - Del Mar, CA) and Zhenya Pereverzin (Jr. - Clackamas, OR) each won two singles matches, as the Stags defeated Hawaii-Hilo 9-0 and then lost to #44 BYU Hawaii 5-4.

Wood earned his eleventh and twelfth wins of the year with a pair of straight set victories at #1 singles. His win against the 32nd ranked singles player in D2 - Yevhen Zakharov of BYU Hawaii - was the final point for CMS in a comeback that fell just short. Pereverzin was an easy winner in both of his matches at #6 singles, giving CMS its first points in singles in both dual matches.

After sweeping Hawaii-Hilo in the morning match, the Stags had hoped to make a statement with strong doubles against BYU Hawaii in the afternoon. Wood and partner Joe Dorn (So. - Washington D.C.) were two points from victory at #1 doubles, but suffered a tough 9-8(6) loss which completed a doubles sweep for the Seasiders. Minutes earlier, the Stags' #2 team of Neel Kotrappa (Jr. Capt - La Verne, CA) and Skyler Butts (Fr. - Santa Ana, CA) could not convert on their one break point to send their match to a tie-break, and lost for the first time as a team.

Down 3-0 after the doubles, CMS would need to win five of six singles to complete the comeback. Dorn lost in straight sets at #2 to put BYU Hawaii up 4-0, but then the Stags began their comeback. Winning comfortably at #6, #4, and then #5, CMS narrowed the gap to 4-3, with Wood up a set and a break at #1, while Butts had just come back to win the second set. Although Butts took a 3-2 lead with a break in the third, he was unable to win another game and the Seasiders clinched the dual with their fifth point. Wood's second set tie-break win at #1 completed the scoring for CMS.

CMS is 11-3 overall and heads back to Claremont to open SCIAC play this Saturday at 2:00 PM against Occidental at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
