This past week it was 10 degrees Fahrenheit in my hometown of Atkinson, NH. While my parents and sister were bundling up by the fire, my teammates and I enjoyed a rest day exploring Laguna Beach. As I watched the sun set over the Pacific Ocean it dawned on me that a year ago I was helping my dad shovel the snow off the driveway. What a difference a year makes!

Love Leads Athenas Over Regals in Dramatic Finish

With just seconds on the clock and the Athenas trailing by one, Maya Love (CMC) battled her way through the lane and finished a layup to give Claremont-Mudd-Scripps a 52-51 victory over the visiting Cal Lutheran Regals. The layup from Love was a fitting way for the Athenas to get their game winner. The sophomore finished the night with 19 points and 16 rebounds in a thrilling victory for CMS.

Stags Drop Sunday Matinee to Visiting Blues

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team wrapped up their opening weekend with a Sunday matinee against the Whitman Blues on Arce Field. The Blues scored in six different innings en route to a 19-6 victory. The Stags were held scoreless until the sixth inning when they plated four runs, but a six-run inning from the Blues in the eighth put the game away.

With first place in the SCIAC on the line, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team hosted the Occidental Tigers on Saturday evening. CMS handed Occidental their first conference loss of the season, defeating the Tigers 70-60 in Roberts Pavilion. Michael Scarlett (CMC) led the Stags with 20 points in the contest. Miles President (HMC) and Kendrick Morris (CMC) joined Scarlett in double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively. Jack Ely (CMC) owned the glass, grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds in the 10-point win.

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team opened the 2018 home slate with a pair of victories on Saturday. First the Athenas defeated No. 40 Caltech with a convincing 9-0 victory. In the nightcap of their double-dip, CMS took down Division II No. 9 UC San Diego 6-3 to move their overall record to 3-0 on the young season.

With plenty of offense behind them, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned their first victories of the season on Saturday. In a twin bill with Lewis & Clark College, the Stags came away with a win in game one, 14-8, and game two, 6-4. Chase Eller (CMC) had a big day at the plate and contributed big hits in both wins. Eller ended his day at the plate with five RBIs, four hits, two doubles and a home run.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team trailed for a majority of the first-half against Occidental on Saturday night, but came from behind to grind out a 67-55 victory. Gloria Bates (CMC) turned in a career-high 18 points off the bench to help lead the Athenas to their 11th SCIAC victory of the season. Maya Love (CMC) collected her 10th double-double of the season. She finished Saturday’s game with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Corinne Bogle (CMC) joined Love and Bates in double-figures, tallying 10 points on the night.

In their final dual of the regular season the No. 16 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team defeated the Chapman Panthers 196-103 to end the year with a 7-1 record against SCIAC teams. The Athenas won a total of 12 events on the day. It was a team effort for CMS on Saturday morning. Allie Umemoto (SC) was the lone Athena to win multiple individual events, claiming the 200 Free and 100 Free.

The No. 9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season with a 219-74 victory over the Chapman Panthers on Saturday morning. The Stags were dominate at times, taking at least the top three spots in seven different events and winning a total of 13 events on the day.

On Saturday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s water polo opened their 2018 home schedule with a meeting against the Carthage Lady Reds. The Athenas earned the 14-8 victory for their first win of the season. The Athenas took an 8-4 lead at the half thanks to a six combined goals from Aracelia Aldrete (CMC) and Jessica Gaffney (CMC) in the opening 16 minutes. CMS continued their strong play into the second-half and cruised to the 14-8 win.

Athenas Claim Down-to-the-Wire Victory to Open 2018

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team opened the 2018 season with a 5-4 victory over the Division II No. 23 Azusa Pacific Cougars. The Athenas swept the three doubles matches and claimed two of the six singles matches to earn the season opening victory. CMS jumped out to a quick start in two of the three doubles matches and held off the Cougars in all three competitions to build an early 3-0 lead. Caroline Cox (CMC) and Catherine Allen (SC) were the first team to win a point for the Athenas, claiming an 8-3 victory in the second doubles match.

2018 Season Opens With Tight Loss to Bearcats

Patrick Gavin (CMC) stepped to the plate in the bottom of the second for his first collegiate at bat and drilled the second pitch he saw over the left field fence for his first career home run. CJ Novogradac (CMC) added a solo homer in the sixth inning, but the power from Gavin and Novogradac was unable to lift the Stags over the Willamette Bearcats as CMS fell in their season opener 4-3 on Friday afternoon.

Women's Basketball Outlasts Scrappy La Verne Squad in Overtime

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the La Verne Leopards 80-77 in overtime on Wednesday night. The Athenas used a balanced scoring effort to complete the victory with Corinne Bogle (CMC) leading the offense with 19 points. Bogle also grabbed 14 rebounds for her first career double-double. Ellery Koelker-Wolfe (CMC) also completed her first career double-double with an impressive 13-point, 18-rebound effort on the evening. The victory improves the Athenas to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in the SCIAC.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team went on the road and cruised to a 72-53 victory over the La Verne Leopards on Wednesday night. For the third consecutive game, senior center Kendrick Morris (CMC) posted a double-double, leading the Stags with 22 points and 13 rebounds. The Stags return home on Saturday for a battle with the SCIAC leading Occidental College Tigers. CMS and Occidental will square-off twice in the next 10 days with the top-spot in the conference on the line. Game time on Saturday is slated for 5:00 p.m.
