After the first round at the Division III National Spring Preview, the No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s golf team sits in second place, just one stroke behind No. 6 Whitman College. The Athenas shot 318 on the day at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.

Senior Sam Baughman (CMC) was dealt with his first loss of the season as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Baseball team (7-7, 4-3) fell 5-3 to Ithaca College (2-3) on Tuesday afternoon.

Stags too tough for No. 7 Carnegie Mellon

In a dual match filled with momentum changes and saved match points, No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team outlasted No. 7 Carnegie Mellon by a 7-2 score as part of a double-header sweep on Sunday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS defeated regional opponent Hardin-Simmons 9-0 in the afternoon match, improving to 7-0 overall on the season.

Several personal records were set by the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field team at the Occidental Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic on Saturday, including a few top three finishes. Only a couple throwers and the CMS distance runners participated at this meet, competing against athletes from several Division I and II schools as well as all of the SCIAC.

Late rally not enough in split with Sagehens

Junior Anna Gurr (CMC) earned her fourth win on the season as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team (5-5, 4-2) split with Pomona-Pitzer (5-6, 3-5) on Saturday afternoon. The Athenas took a one-run lead in the first game and then added to it for the eventual 4-2 win. In the second game of the day, the Sagehens broke out for four runs in the first inning and CMS’ late rally was not enough in the 4-2 loss.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s water polo team (6-8) battled hard against some tough competition at the Lancer Invitational, but ultimately finished the first day with a 1-1 record.

Stags sweep singles, hold off No. 29 Swarthmore 7-2

No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps moved to 5-0 on the season with a 7-2 win over No. 29 Swarthmore on Thursday night at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. After trailing 2-1 after doubles, CMS did not lose a set in singles to pull away from the Garnet. The dual match was played using an experimental modified Division I format, where all singles and doubles matches were played using no-ad scoring.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving program heads into the NCAA Championships as one of only three teams in the nation with individual, relay and diving qualifiers for both men and women. Five stags and six Athenas will make the trip to Shenandoah, Texas for the meet held March 15-18.
