Athenas 8-0, Stags 7-1 at SCIAC Multi-Duals

The cross country teams competed at the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet on Friday afternoon with the Athenas finishing 8-0 and the Stags 7-1.  For just the second time in the 24-year history of the meet, CMS had the individual winners of both races.  Zorg Loustalet won the men's race for the second year in a row while Sara Mostatabi won the women's race.  Racing at La Mirada Park, the women won by scores of 15-50 over Caltech, Cal Lutheran and Chapman, 17-46 over La Verne and Whittier, 19-43 over Redlands, 19-44 over Occidental and 23-37 over Pomona-Pitzer.  The men beat Chapman by forfeit and won by a score of 15-50 over Cal Lutheran and La Verne, 15-48 over Redlands, 19-44 over Caltech, 21-40 over Whittier, 25-34 over Occidental and lost 21-38 to Pomona-Pitzer.

Loustalet led the entire race and cruised to a seven second win in 25:29.3.  Five of the next six runners for the Stags improved dramatically over last year's race.  Alex Mauro finished 10th overall (30th last year), Kyle Lund finished 17th (64th), Jesse Joseph finished 18th (43rd), Josh Sealand was 20th (35th) and Jacob Higle-Ralbovsky was 22nd (31st).  Hunter Olsen finished 12th and was the second freshman finisher.  CMS also had the next three freshmen finishers in David White, Kevin Huang and Alex Mitchell.

Mostatabi also led the entire race and pulled away over the last mile to win by five seconds in 21:44.1.  The depth of the Athenas was evident as CMS had four of the top 10, nine of the top 17 and 15 of the top 30 overall.  Three sophomores were in the CMS top seven and all improved over last year's race with two doing so dramatically.  Caroline Willian finished sixth overall (38th last year), Carmen Mejia was tenth (13th) and Anna Shepard was 12th (54th).  CMS had four of the top five freshmen finishers with Bryn McKillop the top frosh in seventh.  Roselyn Cantu was 11th, Laura Broderick 25th and Emma Su was 27th.  Taia Wu was the seventh runner for CMS in 15th.

Both teams will race again on November 1 at the SCIAC Championships.  The race will be at Prado Regional Park in Chino.  The men will race at 9:00 with the women following at 9:45.
