Athenas take 12-5 loss to Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team took a tough loss at Whittier College on Wednesday night as the Poets (9-12) won 12-5 over the Athenas (6-14). Sophomore Claire Baxter (CMC) led the team with two goals while junior Jessica Gaffney (CMC) and freshman Aracelia Aldrete (CMC) scored one each. Hannah Ellett and Isabella Corrocino led the Poets with three goals each.

The first period was a gritty affair as both teams put in a strong effort on the defensive end, but it was the Poets who managed to find the net twice while keeping the Athenas scoreless. Trailing 3-0 in the second period, Gaffney broke the drought with 6:29 remaining after finding the back of the net, but the Poets got back a point after a penalty shot with 4:04 left in the half. The Poets added two more goals before the half to take a 6-1 lead.

Baxter tried to keep the Athenas in the game after opening up the scoring more than a minute into the third period, but a goal by Ellet followed by a power play goal from Kendyl Riley made it 8-2. The Athenas scored twice in the fourth period, but the gap was too wide to overcome before the final whistle.

The Athenas will look to get back on track as they return home to host Cal Lutheran on Saturday, Mar. 25 at 11 a.m.
