Whittier stops Athenas’ win streak

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team won the fourth quarter while mounting a comeback, but ultimately lost to Whittier, 10-7. Prior to the game, head coach Greg Lonzo and the team honored senior Nicole Orozco (CMC) in her final home game of her career.

The low-scoring first quarter was highlighted by a big save by Mariah Mastrodimos (SCR) when Whittier had a scoring opportunity with a player advantage.

The Athenas scored twice in the second quarter to tie up the game at 2-2. Tess van Hulsen (CMC) was the first Athena to score, drilling a shot into the back of the net from far out in a 6-on-5. Sophomore Jessica Gaffney (CMC) scored halfway through the second period but then the Poets went for three in a row for a halftime score of 5-2.

The third quarter saw the most goals (seven combined). Freshman Krystal Sung (CMC) and junior Ellen Perfect (CMC) scored for CMS while Angelica Hernandez for Whittier scored twice.

CMS held the Poets to no goals in the final eight minutes while scoring twice to narrow the margin to the final score of 10-7. Freshman Kaitlyn Eng (CMC) netted her only goal of the game in the chaos just after a 6-on-5 opportunity. Sophomore Claire Baxter (CMC) had an excellent field block in front of the cage and then sophomore Roxy Kiessling (CMC) scored the final goal with a backhand shot, assisted by sophomore Christine Hu (CMC).

The Athenas are now 6-16 overall, 3-3 in SCIAC play. The final two games of the regular season are at Chapman April 9 and at Pomona-Pitzer April 13.
