Strong first quarter propels Athenas past Regals

CLAREMONT, Calif., – The CMS women's water polo team jumped out to an early lead over Cal Lutheran and never relinquished their lead.  The Athenas beat the Regals 8-5 to make them 5-14 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC.

The Athenas started out the game aggressively as they outscored the Regals 4-2 in the first period.  The Athenas had four different players score in the first period as Haley Conner, Shannon Golden, Erin McCarthy and Brittany Arneson all scored. In the second period the Athenas shut out the Regals as they scored three more goals to increase their lead to 7-2. The Athenas were able to shut out the Regals in the second period in large part to several huge saves by Allison Hu.

After halftime the Regals mounted a comeback led by Jordan Card who scored two goals.  The Regals outscored the Athenas 3-1 in the second half but the comeback was not enough as the Athenas won 8-5.

Arneson led all scorers for the Athenas as she scored three goals. Card led the scoring attack for the Regals with two goals.

The CMS women's water polo team is back in action on March 28 at Occidetnal College at 11 a.m.
