Water polo starts SCIAC with 11-3 win over La Verne
CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team's first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition of the 2015 season, the Athenas beat La Verne 11-3. Seven CMS players scored during the strong conference-opener for the Athenas.
The teams played a tight game through the first quarter with CMS only leading 2-1. Sophomore Brittany Arneson (CMC) started the scoring with the first goal of the game at the 6:41 mark and then freshman Jessica Gaffney (CMC) put in the second goal in the final 20 seconds of the period to break the 1-1 tie. Both Arneson and Gaffney went on to score three goals each in the game.
The second quarter saw the Athenas run away with the lead. The Leos were shut out as CMS tacked on three more goals, widening the gap to 5-1 by halftime. During the quarter, Gaffney added two more goals while sophomore Shannon Golden (CMC) scored in the Athenas' final possession of the half.
The third quarter had aspirations of being more productive for CMS, but ULV's goalie Hailey Westwood made five stops during the period and kept the Athenas to just two goals. Sophomore Erin McCarthy (SCR) and senior Haley Conner (CMC) netted the goals in the third period.
CMS' senior goalie, Allison Hu (CMC) made the most saves in the final period with three. Meanwhile, the Athenas' were their most prolific in scoring goals and totaled four goals in the quarter. Arneson got it started with the first two scores and then freshmen Christine Hu (CMC) and Roxy Kiessling (CMC) each added one to seal the SCIAC victory.
CMS starts conference play at 1-0 and has only one non-SCIAC game on the horizon for the rest of the season. This week, the Athenas host Brown on Mar. 24 at 7 p.m. and Cal Lutheran Mar. 25 at 4 p.m.
