Winter Invite proves to be tough sledding for Athenas in season-opener

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team became the first of CMS' 10 spring sports teams to begin its 2015 competition season, as the team opened with a pair of matches at the Winter Invitational hosted UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 24.

The Winter Invitational featured some of the top Division I water polo teams from around the country and CMS faced two of those teams to start the season, in Loyola Marymount University and UCSB.

CMS opened with an 11-2 loss to LMU. In the match, sophomore utility Brittany Arneson (CMC) had both goals for CMS. LMU took a 1-0 lead at the 5:35 mark of the first quarter. 30 seconds later, Arneson answered for CMS and evened the score at 1-1. LMU then ran off nine-straight scores over the next few quarters to take control of the game.

In the second match of the day, UCSB defeated CMS 20-2. Senior driver Rose Koper (CMC) and Arneson each scored a goal for the Athenas.

CMS opens up the home portion of its schedule on Friday, Jan. 30 against Hartwick at 6 p.m. at Axelrood Pool.
