CMS overcomes ejections and remains undefeated in SCIAC with win over Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Since the loss to Brown a few weeks ago, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team has been on a tear through SCIAC competition. Winning the last four games including Wednesday's 12-8 victory over Redlands, the Athenas remain undefeated in conference play at 5-0.

In a first half rife with ejection calls, CMS held an 8-5 lead at the end of the second period. The Bulldogs often had the advantage as the Athenas were ejected nine times in the half to Redlands' twice. Despite the umpires, CMS continued to play relentless defense, forcing Redlands to turn the ball over.

The Athenas were most successful finding the back of the net with precisely placed lobs over the goal keeper. In the first period, senior Alex Toohey had two goals, and by halftime, owned five of her team's eight. Toohey also won the sprint at the start of all four periods.

Early in the second half, senior Candace Filippelli added two goals of her own to increase the Athenas' lead to 10-5.

With less than five minutes remaining in the game, CMS took a six goal lead on a shot fired by freshman Brittany Arneson.

For Redlands, Deandra Van Houten and Annie Kinney led their team with two goals each.

The Athenas' record is now 13-11 overall and 5-0 in conference.  CMS travels to Whittier and Occidental before returning home for the final game of the regular season against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m.
