Sisters face off as Brown beats CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. - In their first game after spring break, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team lost to Brown University 12-9 on Tuesday evening. The non-conference matchup drew a big crowd due to the competing sisters: junior Rose Koper for CMS and freshman Hannah Koper for Brown.

CMS led after the first quarter 2-1 but then Brown went on a 4-1 run to take a 5-3 lead with less than three minutes remaining. The Athenas answered back with two goals in the last minute of the half by freshman Brittany Arneson and Koper to tie the game at five goals apiece.

Brown came out aggressive in the second half and CMS fell behind 10-7 after the third quarter. Each team scored two goals in the fourth quarter for a final score of 12-9 in Brown's favor.

Senior Alyssa Filippelli had three goals for the Athenas while Koper and Arneson each had two.

On the completion of the game, head coach Greg Lonzo said, "the girls played well; we just had missed opportunities."

Brown is 10-10 on the season and had just come off a big win over Pomona-Pitzer earlier in the day.

The Athenas' record is now 9-11 overall and 1-0 in conference.  CMS will face only SCIAC opponents for the rest of the season hosting La Verne first, on March 29 at 11 a.m.
