Battle for First Place Goes to Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team won Saturday April 13, 10-6 over the Whittier College Poets at Axelrood Pool. The win gives the Athenas a two game lead in the conference standings and a SCIAC record of 6-0 and an overall record of 12-13.

The Athenas wasted little time finding the back of the net, scoring in the first minute of the contest from junior Candace Filippelli. Junior Alyssa Filippelli added another goal to take the early 2-0 lead. Whittier scored to make it 2-1, but with 31 seconds left in the period, C. Filippelli added a long range goal, making the score at the end of one period, 3-1.

CMS kept the pressure on second period with some great defense and timely steals.  The Poets scored first in the second period, inching closer, 3-2.  The Athenas responded on their next possession, with a goal from junior Alex Toohey. Whittier had a tough time getting good shots from the aggressive Athena defenders and was anchored in goal by sophomore goalie Allison Hu. The Athenas never let the Poets get any closer in the half and the rest of the game. At the half, CMS lead 5-2.

Period three was much of the same from the Athenas offense, scoring three more goals by sophomore Haley Conner, senior Jeanne Kelber and sophomore Rose Koper. The Athenas lead 8-3 after three periods of play.

The Poets added three goals in the fourth period, but CMS finished with two more of their own, winning by the final score of 10-6.

The Athenas will be back in action at Axelrood Pool for senior day, Wednesday April 17, against Occidental College at 5:00 PM.
