Halftime Lead Doesn’t Hold, Athenas Lose Heartbreaker

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team could not hold onto a halftime lead in a non-conference match with Brown University Tuesday night, falling 9-8 at Axelrood Pool.

CMS (7-13) took an early 1-0 lead on a Rose Koper power lob, but Brown Unveristy (11-11) was able to respond with a goal of their own before the end of the first quarter. The Athenas exploded in the second for five goals with Candace Filippelli leading the charge with two while Koper, Alyssa Filippelli, and Alex Toohey had one apiece to take a 6-2 lead going into halftime.

However, in the second half the Athenas could not stop Brown who was able to score four in the third and three in the fourth, including the game winner with nine seconds left in the game. Both C. Filippelli and Koper ended the game with three goals apiece.

CMS looks to stay undefeated in conference play as they travel to La Verne to take on the Leopards at 11 AM on March 30th.
