CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its last non-conference match before SCIAC play begins, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team lost 12-6 to Marist College on Wednesday morning at Axelrood Pool. The Athenas don't have much time to think about the loss however, as they open SCIAC play at Chapman at 5 p.m., less than five hours after the completion of the team's game against Marist. CMS (6-12) has now lost its last two games and five of its last six overall. CMS has played just two Division III games so far this season, both wins.

Against Marist (15-7), CMS fell into a 3-0 first quarter deficit with 1:38 remaining in the quarter as three different players scored for Marist. With four seconds remaining in the first quarter, CMS got on the board with a goal by junior driver Alex Toohey. The teams traded goals to start the second quarter as junior utility Candace Filippelli narrowed Marist's lead to 4-2 at the 5:36 mark of the second quarter and CMS could not get any closer. Marist closed out the second quarter on a 2-0 run to take a 6-2 lead at halftime as five different players scored for Marist in the first half, led by two goals from Robyn Crabtree.

Down five scores at 8-3 in the third quarter, CMS scored back-to-back goals by junior driver Alyssa Filippelli and Candace Filippelli to get within three at 8-5 with 7:39 left in the game. Marist closed out the win with four of the game's last five goals. Toohey, Candace Filippelli and Alyssa Filippelli each had two scores for CMS while sophomore goalie had Allison Hu had 13 blocks. Marist was led by three scores from Brooke Else.
