CMS Volleyball Falls at Whittier, But Stays Alone in First in SCIAC

WHITTIER, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team dropped a 25-21, 25-21, 26-24 road decision to Whittier on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, CMS falls to 17-5 overall and 11-2 in the SCIAC, but stays alone in first place in the SCIAC after Pomona-Pitzer defeated La Verne, leaving both the Leopards and Sagehens at 11-3.

The Tuesday loss to La Verne snapped a 59-match win streak for CMS against SCIAC opponents, dating back to a 3-2 loss to Chapman in 2019. The Athenas defeated Cal Lutheran 3-1 yesterday, but couldn't keep the momentum going as it fell in straight sets to a league opponent for the first time since 2016 against Cal Lutheran.

Brenna Bell led CMS with 10 kills, including one with CMS down 24-23 to fight off the first match point, but Whittier was able to bounce back with the next two points for the win. Dede Carranza had 20 digs defensively for the Athenas.

CMS will be back in action on Tuesday night when it hosts Caltech for a 7 p.m. contest.
