Kurt Vlasich Earns Career Win No. 300 as CMS Volleyball Sweeps Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Kurt Vlasich earned his 300th career win in only his 12th season as a head coach, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.

With the 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 win, CMS moves to 16-3 overall and 10-0 in the SCIAC on the year, while Vlasich improves his career record at CMS to 300-63. The Athenas have also now won 59 straight SCIAC-sponsored matches (53 in the regular season and six in the SCIAC Tournament) and have won all 10 matches this season by 3-0 sweeps.

In fact, CMS has dropped only one set in SCIAC in the last two seasons, with Pomona-Pitzer earning the win in the first set last year at home before the Athenas came back for a 3-1 win. Today's sweep makes CMS 87-1 in sets in SCIAC play over the last two seasons.

The Athenas were efficient in the win over the Sagehens, hitting .430 as a team with 47 kills in 93 attempts and only seven errors. The CMS middles had spectacular performances, with Audrey Sawyer tallying nine kills in 14 attempts, and Kelsey Polhemus finishing with six kills in nine attempts, as the two combined to hit .655 (15 kills in 23 attempts).

Setter Georgia McGovern helped quarterback the efficient CMS attack with 36 assists, while also contributing six kills in nine attempts. Brooke McKee led CMS with 12 kills, and added three block assists to tie Polhemus for the team lead. Dede Carranza and Jenna Holmes each had 11 digs defensively.

CMS will be back in action on Tuesday when it heads to La Verne for another tough SCIAC matchup. The Leopards had four set points against the Athenas, before CMS pulled out a hard-fought 27-25, 25-16, 26-24 win on Oct. 3.
