CMS Volleyball Picks Up Another SCIAC Sweep, Takes Down Redlands 3-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team started slow, and then got better as the match went on as it rolled to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-10 win over Redlands on Tuesday night at Roberts Pavilion.

CMS improved to 14-0 with the win, and 4-0 in conference, with all three league wins coming via sweep. Brenna Bell continued her torrid season by hitting .500, with a team-high 11 kills in eight attempts, raising her hitting percentage from the year from .424 to .432. Fellow right-side hitter Summer Ellis had six kills in seven attempts, while Jenna Holmes picked up a double-double with 10 kills and a team-best 13 digs.

Redlands, which came in at 0-6 on the year, rose to the challenge and opened up the first set with a 5-0 run. The Bulldogs still led 14-9, before Ellis had a kill and Kelsey Polhemus combined on two blocks in a 4-0 run that pulled CMS within a point. After Redlands made it 15-13, CMS scored the next six to take control, with Bell tallying three kills during the run off sets from Georgia McGovern, while Jackie Jones added a service ace.

McGovern then had four straight assists to turn a 19-16 lead into a 23-16 advantage, feeding Bell, Audrey Sawyer and Jenna Holmes twice. Ellis then finished off the set at 25-17 off a pass from Spencer Hagenbuch

With the slow start behind them, CMS rolled to 25-14 and 25-10 wins in the second and third sets. Jones had three kills and Bell two in a 5-0 run to start the second set. An 8-0 run in the third set turned a 5-3 lead into a 13-3 advantage, with McGovern contributing three aces during the run.

CMS hit .421 as a team for the match, with a high of .481 in the second set. The Athenas had only eight errors in the match, to go with 48 kills, with five of the eight errors coming from Redlands blocks. McGovern finished with 24 assists to go with her three aces.

CMS will be back in action on Friday when it travels to meet Cal Lutheran in a battle of SCIAC unbeatens at 7 p.m.
