Williams, McGovern Sweep SCIAC Weekly Awards for CMS Volleyball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior right-side hitter Melanie Williams and sophomore setter Georgia McGovern earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week and SCIAC Specialist of the Week, the league office announced today.

Williams and McGovern helped CMS, which moved up to No. 6 in the latest AVCA rankings, start out the season with a perfect 4-0 record after sweeping two doubleheaders at the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Athenas defeated UC Santa Cruz in a tight opening match 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 25-27, 25-23) and then knocked off St. Norbert 3-0, Eastern Nazarene 3-0 and Wisconsin-Oshkosh 3-0. 

Williams was named to the All-Tournament team after leading CMS in kills with 53 on the weekend, to go along with a team-high nine blocks. She hit .322 over the four matches, and had a match high of 16 kills, which she accomplished in both the UC Santa Cruz and Wisconsin-Oshkosh matches. 

McGovern had a strong opening weekend to her collegiate career, tallying 130 assists over the four matches. She opened up by breaking 50 assists in her first collegiate match (52) against UC Santa Cruz, and then split time at setter in her final three starts and added 78 more, capped off by 32 in the win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh. 

CMS will be back in action this weekend when it travels to the East-West Battle, hosted by Cal Lutheran. The Athenas will face the current No. 1 (Trinity),  No. 2 (Emory) and No. 18 (WashU) teams in the nation at the two-day event on Friday and saturday
