CMS Volleyball Clinches At Least a Share of Regular Season SCIAC Title with Sweep of Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Amanda Walker and junior Melanie Moore each had 11 kills and senior Phoebe Madsen had a triple-double with 10 kills, 10 digs and 20 assists as the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball extended its winning streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 sweep of Redlands on Tuesday night at Roberts Pavilion.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-15, as the win clinches at least a share of the SCIAC regular season title for the Athenas, who improve to 23-3 overall and 14-1 on the year. Redlands slips to 8-17 overall and 5-9 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Chapman remains one game behind the loss columm, and CMS can clinch the regular season title outright at La Verne on Saturday. Even if CMS and Chapman end up tied at 14-2 in league play, the Athenas would still have the tiebreaker for the top seed and home court advantage in the SCIAC Tournament, due to fewer sets lost head-to-head (Chapman defeated CMS 3-2, and the Athenas won the rematch 3-0).
Madsen had 10 kills in only 17 attempts with two errors, hitting .471 on the day, to go along with her 20 assists and 10 digs. Senior libero Sarah Tritschler had a big day defensively with 22 digs, while Moore had five blocks to go with her 11 kills.
CMS swung the first set with a 6-0 run to take a 14-9 lead, with Moore contributing two kills during the run and senior Lina Aluzri adding an ace. A Madsen kill stretched the lead to 17-10 before Redlands was able to battle back to within four points at 20-16. First-year Izzy Sakoda and Moore each answered back with kills, and a kill from junior Regan Dinovitz made the score 24-19 before a service error from Redlands finished off the set at 25-21.

Redlands pulled ahead 16-15 in the second set, before CMS used another 6-0 run to surge in front. Sakoda started the run with a kill, Walker had two kills and a block and Moore had back-to-back blocks during the run that gave CMS a 21-16 lead. With the score 24-19, Moore and junior Lucila Grinspan were able to combine on a block for the set-ending point.
The third set saw CMS once again use a 6-0 run, turning an 8-6 lead into a commanding 14-6 advantage. Madsen had two kills during the run, while Moore had one and Dinovitz and Grinspan combined on a block. A Madsen ace built the lead to 10 points (18-8) and a Dinovitz kill put the lead at 22-9. After four straight Redlands points, a Walker kill made it 23-13 and Moore had the final two CMS points on kills for a 25-15 win.

The win was the 32nd in a row for CMS against SCIAC opponents at home, since a five-set defeat to La Verne in 2016, which is the only defeat that the Athenas have ever suffered at Roberts Pavilion since it opened that year. The Athenas will now be able to defend the Roberts Pavilion floor throughout the SCIAC Tournament, which begins with the semifinals next week on Nov. 7, with the finals on Nov. 9.
