Straight set win for No. 2 Athenas over Oxy

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team came away with the 3-0 victory over Occidental (25-14, 25-16, 25-17). The Athenas are now 10-0 overall and leading the conference at 2-0. Senior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC) led all hitters with 11 kills on the night.

In the first set, CMS hit .500 and only recorded one error. Junior Shelbi Stein (CMC) led the way with five kills, two of which were in a string of six serves by sophomore Hannah Grobisen (CMC).

The second set took significantly longer as Occidental rallied in the middle to bring the Tigers within two points at 14-12. Kerkhof made seven digs in the set and had six kills in nine attacks. Junior Mariah Rigg (CMC) came up with a big solo block early in the set to keep Grobisen's serve going strong.

Junior Crystal Anderson (CMC) took the most swings in the final set and recorded five kills. Each Stein and Anderson had nine kills in the match while junior Clara Madsen (CMC) racked up 22 assists. Grobisen ended up with three aces.

Next up for CMS is the highly anticipated matchup against the 2015 National Champions, Cal Lutheran on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. The Athenas beat the Regals in last year's SCIAC Tournament but then did not meet up in the NCAA postseason. Cal Lutheran is currently ranked No. 4 after losses to Washington-St. Louis and Wittenberg.
