Momentum continues for CMS with road sweep of Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after holding on for an exhilarating five-set conference home win over No. 7 Cal Lutheran, the N0. 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team swept rival Pomona-Pitzer 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 on Oct. 24 at Voelkel Gymnasium. CMS is now 21-5 overall, 11-2 in SCIAC.

The first set saw CMS lead for the first portion, but Pomona-Pitzer jumped ahead and held an advantage as late as 22-20 after a kill by Emma Burdekin. CMS answered with five-straight points to close out the set, three of the points coming on Pomona-Pitzer errors and the other two points coming off kills by sophomore outside hitter Crystal Anderson (CMC) and sophomore outside hitter Shelbi Stein (CMC).

CMS controlled the second set, leading from 6-5 on. With the score even at 5-5, CMS scored 10 points in a row to take command of the set. Stein had four service aces for CMS during the 10-0 run. On the day, Stein also had a match-high 16 kills to go along with five digs.

Pomona-Pitzer got off to a quick start in the third set with the first three points. CMS then came back with three points of its own. Pomona-Pitzer led 9-8 after a kill by Sarah Gamble. Sophomores Margaux Arntson (CMC) and Sarah Bruml (SCR) then had kills to give CMS the lead at 10-9. Pomona-Pitzer tied the score at 17 on a kill by Burdekin but could not regain the lead as the Athenas went on to sweep Pomona-Pitzer. Junior outside hitter Nicole Kerkhof posted a double-double with 15 kills and 19 digs in the match. Stephanie Sun led Pomona-Pitzer with13 kills.

The Athenas are tied with Cal Lutheran and La Verne for the conference lead, each with two losses in conference. CMS has three remaining matches in the regular season, two of which are road matches. The final home match of the regular season is on Oct. 30 vs. Chapman. Next up for CMS is a road match at Occidental on Oct. 27.
