Latest top-25 poll has CMS at No. 9; new ranking ties regular season program-best

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team's record-breaking 2014 season concluded with a No. 9 ranking in the season's final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top-25 poll. That marked the highest CMS volleyball had ever been ranked in the AVCA's regular season national poll.

The AVCA had this year's team eighth in its preseason poll, but CMS dropped to 11th in the Week 1 regular season poll after a 3-2 loss to Carthage in the Pacific Coast Classic on Sept. 5. With a 3-2 win over then No. 1 Emory (currently No.4) at the Emory Invite on Sept. 19, CMS has now jumped back to No. 9 which ties the team's highest ever regular season ranking.

Prior to this season and the end of last year, the highest CMS has ever climbed in the polls is 12th and that came in 1998.

The Athenas did lose a tough conference road match to La Verne (3-2) on Sept. 22 which could drop the team in next week's poll depending on how the rest of the week's matches play out. Nevertheless, the Athenas are in the midst of their most successful stretch in team history.

CMS hosts Whittier on Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. and then heads to No. 7 Cal Lutheran on Sept. 26 for a 6 p.m. match.
