CMS knocked out of Regionals in closely contested, 3-1 loss to Colorado College

ATLANTA, Ga. – Colorado College ended the No. 23 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team's season in the second round of the Atlanta Regional on Saturday, Nov. 16 in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships. The Tigers upped their record to 35-4 following the 3-1 verdict over the Athenas who closed out their campaign with a program-best 25-7 record. Despite the 3-1 result, the match remained tight as Colorado won 25-21, 31-29, 21-25, 25-23.

CMS won the third set but led in each of the first two sets against Colorado College, but could not hold the lead.

In an intense and highly charged contest, the final stats were almost equal with CC hitting .199 (55-20—176) and CMS .184 (61-25—196). The Tigers held a slim 94-88 advantage in digs while CMS finished with a 7-6 edge in total blocks.

Freshman Nicole Kerkhof led CMS with 17 kills and 24 digs. Senior setter Hilary Bruegl doled out 47 assists and contributed 10 digs.

Colorado College spread out its offensive attack with three sophomores totaling double digits in kills, sophomore Emily Phillips (15), Lauren Hahn (13) and Courtney Birkett (10). Another sophomore, Sophie Merrifield, spearheaded the defensive effort with a match-high 25 digs.
