Athenas Sweep the Week with Win Over Regionally Ranked Cal Lutheran

The CMS Volleyball team upset Cal Lutheran University Saturday night to hand the Regals just their second conference loss of the season. CMS went ahead in game one by as many as 5 points, but faced a 24-24 tie before going on a 6-3 run to outlast Cal Lu 30-27. CMS was dominant in game 2, quickly pulling out to a 20-9 lead and held on for the final third of the game, limiting the Regals to .108 hitting average, and allowing just 13 points to win 30-13. Not easily discouraged, the Cal Lutheran squad rallied back in game 3 and though down only a single point at 28-29, the Athenas failed to convert the tying point and Cal Lutheran won the set, 31-29. Game 4 was a close battle, both teams trading points, neither capitalizing on small leads until CMS went ahead 25-24 and did not allow another Cal Lu point. The Athenas were led by senior middle blocker, Camille Butts (Sr., SCR, Ontario CA) who notched 11 kills without a single error on just 20 attempts. Right side hitter, Alicia Freeman (Sr., CMC, Santa Barbara CA) added 14 kills, while outside hitters, Lindsay Hull (Sr., CMC, Phoenix AZ) and Kendra Huff (Fr., CMC, Downey CA) chipped in 11 apiece. Junior libero, Greer Donley (CMC, Leawood KS) paced both teams defensively with 16 digs and setter Alex Harrison (Jr., CMC, Tucson AZ) had 52 assists. The win places the Athenas in lone possession of third place in the SCIAC, just a match behind Cal Lutheran in the standings
