Athenas 3-1 In Pacific Coast Classic

CMS co-hosted the Pacific Coast Classic over the weekend and came away with a 3-1 record. After dropping their opening match to Willamette University 3-2, the team won two straight 3-0 matches before pulling out an exciting 3-2 win over George Fox University.

The Athenas lost their first two games to the Bearcats of Willamette 30-27 and 30-24 and then rallied to win the third and fourth games 30-28 and 32-30. They were unable to sustain their momentum and lost in the fifth game 15-12. CMS rebounded with a strong 30-22, 30-22, 30-24 win over Whitworth College and then opened play the next day with a 30-23, 32-30, 30-28 win over Eastern University. CMS rallied multiple times in their final match against George Fox. The Bruins won the first game 30-24 and the Athenas came back to win the second 30-27. The teams flipped scores in the next two games with George Fox winning 30-27 and then CMS winning 30-24. The Bruins led 10-5 in the final game before the Athenas closed on a 10-1 run to win the match.

Alicia Freeman (JR, Santa Barbara) led the team with 52 kills and 65 digs in the tournament. Camille Butts (JR, Ontario) added 31 kills on .264 hitting along with 12 blocks. Alex Harrison (SO, Tempe, AZ) and Kristine Grigsby (SO, Issaquah, WA) combined for 185 assists as they split time at setter. Greer Donley (SO, Leawood, KS) was named to the All-Tournament team at defensive specialist. She had 48 digs in the tournament.

CMS is now 3-2 on the season. They travel to Chicago, IL this weekend to play in the Gargoyle Classic at the University of Chicago. Their Friday schedule included North Park University and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
