Seven Athenas Earn USTFCCCA All-Region Honors for Indoor Season

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Seven members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team earned All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA for indoor track and field season, including several who earned it in multiple events, the organization announced today.

The distance medley relay team of Riley Capuano, Sally Gaskell, Laura Zimmer and Natalie Bitetti captured All-Region distinction while earning the 11th best time in the nation and earning an invitation to nationals this week.

All four members of the relay also earned All-Region in individual competitions, with Bitetti earning it four times (mile, 3000 meters, 5000 meters, DMR). Capuano was a three-time winner, adding the mile and the 3000 to her DMR honor, while Zimmer added an all-region honor in the mile and Gaskell picked one up in the 800 meters.

Josephine Jett, who has already earned SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors twice during outdoor season, picked up USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the 60-meter hurdles, while Elle Marsyla was honored in the 5000 and Madeline Seifert was chosen in the pole vault.

The top five individuals in each event from each region on the year-end descending order lists earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each member of the region's top-three relay teams.

CMS had seven honorees despite very limited participation during indoor season, with a small contingent only competing once at either the Whitworth Invitational or the Boston University Valentine Invitational in February. Bitetti, Capuano and Zimmer also competed at the Boston University Season Opener in December.

In addition to the DMR, Bitetti will also compete individually at nationals this weekend, running the 3000 meters on Saturday, where she is the No. 3 seed. The other Athenas will be back to action for outdoor competition on Saturday when CMS competes at the Occidental Sprint and Distance Carnival.
