Sabrine Griffith Wins SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Sabrine Griffith was named the SCIAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for events through Sunday, March 24, the league office announced today.

Griffith earned the honor for her impressive performance in the long jump at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational on Friday. Griffith finished in sixth place out of 40 competitors in the event with a top distance of 5.73 meters (18 feet, 9.75 inches).

The short list of competitors who finished ahead of her included two from Division I Kansas State, one from Division I host San Diego State, one from Division II power Adams State, and one from Division II Seattle Pacific. She finished ahead of several other Division I competitors from BYU, UC Santa Barbara and others to finish in sixth.

Her jump also was a personal record and moved her into fourth place on the CMS all-time list, just a quarter of an inch out of third, which was set by Ellyn Erving in 2014.

Griffith becomes the second different CMS women's track and field athlete to win the SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week honor this year, joining senior Jacque Desmond, who earned the honor after her performance in the pole vault at the Occidental Spring Break Classic.

CMS will be back in action this weekend for its second SCIAC Multi-Dual, which will be held at Caltech.
