Griffith Finishes Sixth of 40 in Long Jump to Highlight Women's Track and Field at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior Sabrine Griffith had an impressive sixth-place finish for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team in the long jump out of 40 competitors, many of which came from Division I schools, on Friday at the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State.

Griffith had a top distance of 5.73 meters (18'9.75"), which placed her behind only two jumpers from Kansas State, one from host San Diego State, one from Division II power Adams State and one from Seattle Pacific. The jump was her personal best and moves into fourth place all-time in CMS history, just a quarter of an inch out of third, which was set by Ellyn Erving in 2014.

The long jumpers performed well as a group, as junior Amanda Mell was tenth with a jump of 18'3", and sophomore Grace Pratt was 12th with a top distance of 18'1.75" for the Athenas. Mell's jump moves her into eighth place on the CMA all-time list, while Pratt moves in at No. 10.

Mell was also third in the triple jump out of 12 with a top distance of 37'9.25", setting a new personal best, while sophomore Carolyn Weisman had a jump of 36'7.34" to come in seventh.

Senior Jacque Desmond, who was the SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week two weeks ago, had another strong showing in the pole vault for the Athenas, coming in seventh with a top height of 12'2.5" among a field of 29 competitors. Desmond was beaten out by only four Division I pole vaulters from BYU, Nevada and Wisconsin, and two club competitors from Mexico.

Griffith also finished in 12th place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17, putting her in the top half of a competitive field of 24 (seven of the competitors ahead of her were Division I). Senior McKenzie Deutsch was 13th (out of 34) in the 800 with a time of 2:25.48, while Bailey Mknelly was sixth in the high jump with a 4'11.5" clearance.

Sophomore Deyana Marsh came in fourth place in her group of the hepathlon, which was held on Thursday and Friday, finishing with 3579 points, including a second-place finish of 11 in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.50. Sophomore Aubrey Egerter was right behind in a close fifth with 3576 points, including second in the long jump (15'7").

After finishing the Aztec Invitational tomorrow, CMS will be back in action next Saturday for a SCIAC Multi-Dual hosted by Caltech.
