Abraham and Bassett Headline All-SCIAC Awards for Athenas, Stewart Named Coach of the Year

LAGUNA NIGEL, Calif. – The 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) women's track & field teams were announced Wednesday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches. After winning their fourth-straight SCIAC Championship, the Athenas raked in the all-conference honors, headlined by Tyra Abraham (SC) taking home SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year, Emily Bassett (CMC) being named SCIAC Field Athlete of the Year, and head coach Glenn Stewart and his staff earning their second-straight SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honor.

Tyra Abraham (SC) was voted the SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year after dominating at the 2018 SCIAC Championships. Abraham, currently the fastest woman in Division III, took home her fourth-straight SCIAC Title in the 100 meter dash with the fastest time in Division III this year at 11.59, and her third title in the 200 meter dash (24.32). She then ran the anchor leg of the fastest 4x100 meter relay team in SCIAC meet and CMS history, clocking the fastest time in Division III this year at 46.48. She also anchored the 4x400 meter relay team that finished second at 4:01.01. This is the second time Abraham has received the honor in her career, having also earned it in 2016. In 2015, she was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. She was named All-SCIAC in four events this year; the 100 and 200 meter dashes and the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. She has been made all-conference in the 100 meter event all four years, and has earned the honor three times in the 200 meter dash, 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay

Emily Bassett (CMC) earned the honor of SCIAC Field Athlete of the Year after setting a new SCIAC meet record in the hammer throw with a toss of 59.99m (196'10"), a week after hitting the third farthest mark in Division III history of 62.04m (203'6"). Bassett also won the discus title at the SCIAC Championships, hitting a distance of 41.74m (136'11"). She took second in the shot put, tossing the weighted ball 11.81m (38"9"). This is her first time earning the honor, and her third time being named All-SCIAC in all three throwing events.

CMS head coach Glenn Stewart and his staff secured SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors after leading the Athenas to the SCIAC Championship title. CMS garnered eight dual meet points during the regular season, and 24 points by winning the two-day championship meet for 32 total points. Also voted the coaching staff of the year in 2017, Stewart and the Athenas amassed 208 points at the SCIAC Championships this season, besting the next best team by 46 points. 

Also garnering All-SCIAC recognition, NIrel JonesMitchell (CMC) took home the honor in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and 4x100 meter relay. The sophomore climbed the CMS all-time lists and now sits second in the both the 100 meter dash (12.10) and the 200 meter dash (24.94), both set at the SCIAC Championships.

Becca Stewart (SC) won the 400 meter dash (58.46) to earn the honor for the second time in her career in the event. Kyleigh Mann (CMC) won the 800 meter run to earn her all-conference nod.

Bryn McKillop (SC) won the 1500 meter run (4:27.48) and placed second in the 5000 meter run (17:40.6) to earn two All-SCIAC mentions. Lauren Stanislaw (SC) won her event, the 10000 meter run (36:58.36), and Ellen Berkley (CMC) took home the title in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:59.22) and were named All-SCIAC.

Finding success on the track and in the field, Sabrine Griffith (CMC) was named all-conference in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing third (14.72), and the long jump where she finished second (5.66m, 18'7").

Both relay teams shined, with the 4x100 quartet of Griffith, Grace Pratt (CMC), JonesMitchell, and Abraham setting a new SCIAC meet and CMS record (46.48) with their win. The team of Pratt, Deyana Marsh (HMC), Stewart, and Abraham finished second at the meet in the 4x400 meter relay, clocking in at 4:01.01 to earn all-conference nods.
