CMS Women's Tennis Caps Off Busy Weekend with 6-3 Win over WashU

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team finished off a gauntlet of four ranked teams in four days at home this weekend with its fourth win, defeating WashU 6-3 on Monday morning at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

CMS now stands at 11-0 this season and has won 34 straight matches dating back to last year, when it fell to Chicago at the ITA Indoor Championships to slip to 4-1. The Athenas won their last 23 matches in a row last season to win their second straight national title and have now won 11 straight to start the 2024 campaign.

That stretch included taking the championship of the ITA Indoors last weekend, with wins over No. 10 Carnegie Mellon, No. 8 Johns Hopkins and No. 2 Chicago. This weekend, the Athenas defeated No. 14 Sewanee and No. 18 Kenyon on Friday, edged No. 7 Emory 5-4 yesterday, and defeated No. 17 WashU today.

Nikolina Batoshvili provided the clinching win at No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-3), after not originally being in the singles lineup, but filling in when the Athenas had a scratch after doubles. Batoshvili combined with Alisha Chulani for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and Chulani provided the first point in singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2.

Audrey Yoon picked up a win at No. 1 singles to make the score 4-1, but the Athenas didn't have a sure win on any of the other four courts, as WashU had visions of a comeback, winning at No. 5 and No. 4 to close the gap to 4-3, while earning a split at No. 3 and Emily Chiasson leading Nikolina Batoshvili in the second set with hopes of a split.

Batoshvili, though, got a key break for a 5-3 lead in the second, and then came up with a service ace to set up match point at 40-15. The final shot from WashU sailed long, and the Athenas had their clinch. Sena Selby capped off the win when she had a dominant finish in her match, taking the final set 6-3 after trailing 3-1 in the third and taking the final five games for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win.

Yoon and Katherine Wurster added a doubles win at No. 3, taking their match 8-3 to give CMS a 2-0 lead before WashU was able to salvage the final doubles point.

CMS will be back in action in 11 days after some much-needed rest, when it takes on Middlebury at home on March 22, which is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation.
