CMS Women's Tennis Takes ITA Indoor Title With 4-2 Win Over Chicago

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - The top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team made an early-season statement by defeating the top challenger to its throne, defeating Chicago 4-2 in the finals of the ITA Division III Indoor Championship on Sunday morning at the Top Seed Tennis Center.

Lindsay Eisenman and Ella Brissett won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, and then each took singles wins, with Eisenman rallying for a three-set win at No. 1 for the clincher, coming back for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over top-ranked Sylwia Mikos.

The win represented a bit of redemption for Eisenman, who fell to Mikos in the finals of the ITA Cup in the fall 6-1, 6-2, and then fell 6-1 in the first set on Sunday, before digging town and turning the tables to provide the clinch.

Brissett also came up big at No. 5 singles, winning the first set 7-6 (taking the tiebreaker 7-5) and then rolling in the second set 6-1. Alisha Chulani had a dominant win at No. 3 singles that took only an hour, winning 6-2, 6-1 to put the Athenas ahead 2-0.

Chulani and Nikolina Batsohvili also picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point for the Athenas, with the match being played by Division I rules with doubles counting as one point. Audrey Yoon and Katherine Wurster were in a 4-4 deadlock at No. 3, but that match was abandoned once the doubles point was secured.

Yoon was the last player left on the court in singles with the match was clinched, and she was ahead 6-4, 5-3 at No. 2 singles. Wurster retired at No. 6 singles, down a set but up 6-5 in the second.

The win marked the second ITA Indoor title in program history, after also winning it in 2020 with a 5-4 victory over Emory in the finals.

CMS will be back in action at home on Friday when it takes on Kenyon at 1 p.m. and Sewanee at 6 p.m., and will then meet Emory on Sunday and WashU on Monday in a big stretch of home matches.
