CMS Women's Tennis Controls Singles to Take Win over Brandeis

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis bounced back from a 1-0 deficit after doubles to earn straight-set wins at the top five singles lines and earn a 5-2 win over Brandeis on Friday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

With the win, CMS moves to 4-0 on the season, with the four wins coming against a Division I (UC San Diego), Division II (Point Loma), Division III (Brandeis) and NAIA (Westcliff) programs. Brandeis slips to 2-3 on the year with the loss.

CMS mixed up its doubles line-ups and Brandeis was able to take advantage and carry a 1-0 lead into singles. Alisha Chulani and Ella Brissett won the first match 6-4 at No. 2, but the Judges took wins at No. 3 and No. 1 earn the doubles point (the match was played by Division I rules, with doubles counting as one point instead of three).

The momentum quickly shifted in singles, though, as CMS won the first set on courts No. 1-5, dropping only four games between them. Jade Haller was the first to the finish line at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win to level the match at 1-1, and Sena Selby followed shortly after with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 to give CMS the lead for good.

Audrey Yoon earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 to bring the Athenas within one win of the clinch, and Chulani came through at No. 3 for a 6-0, 6-4 win, closing out with wins in the last three games. Lindsay Eisenman earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 to make it 5-1 for CMS, before Brandeis' Lika Bolkvadze salvaged the final point at No. 6 (6-1, 7-5)

CMS will be back in action next weekend at the ITA Indoor Nationals in Kentucky, beginning with a match against Carnegie Mellon on March 1.
