CMS Women's Tennis Earns Quick Shutout of Chapman to Advance to SCIAC Finals

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned a quick 5-0 win over Chapman in the SCIAC Semifinals on Friday afternoon, advancing through to tomorrow's championship match against Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m.

With the win, CMS improves to 21-1 overall, and has now won 17 straight matches since falling to Chicago in the finals of the ITA Indoor Championships.

The Athenas dropped only four games in doubles, with Katherine Wurster and Sena Selby finishing first at No. 2 with an 8-1 win. Nikolina Batoshvili and Alisha Chulani followed with an 8-1 win at No. 1, and Lindsay Eisenman and Ella Brissett finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 2.

Under SCIAC Postseason Tournament play, the match is halted at the clinch, which meant that CMS needed to win on only two of six courts to end the match. Wurster was the first to end her match, taking a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1, and Batoshvili followed 30 seconds later with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 to give CMS the 5-0 win.

Brissett was up 6-1, 4-1 at No. 4 singles, and Selby and Chulani were both up a set in their singles matches as well. Audrey Yoon was tied 5-5 in the first set in hers when the match was halted.

CMS and Pomona-Pitzer met last week, with CMS prevailing in a tight one 5-4, as Yoon provided the clincher. CMS also defeated Pomona-Pitzer in last year's SCIAC Championship match 5-4, springboarding from that win to a national title three weeks later.
