CMS Women's Tennis Defeats Grinnell, Stretches Winning Streak to Eight

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team won its eighth straight match, defeating Grinnell 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

With the win, CMS moves to 12-1 on the season, including eight straight wins since it fell to No. 1 Chicago in the championship of the ITA Indoor Nationals. Grinnell falls to 10-3 with the loss.

The Athenas took a 3-0 lead after doubles, with Ella Brissett and Sena Selby earning a quick 8-1 win at No. 3, followed shortly by Katherine Wurster and Audrey Yoon earning an 8-2 win at No. 2. The No. 1 doubles team had to battle for its win, as Alisha Chulani and Nikolina Batoshvili trailed 6-5 (on serve), but closed out with three straight wins for an 8-6 victory and a doubles sweep.

Lindsey Eisenman quickly got CMS on the verge of the clinch with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Yoon earned the fifth and decisive point 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, and Arushi Malik followed a few minutes later with a 6-2. 6-2 win at No. 6.

Grinnell made CMS work for its last three points, as Chulani took a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles, Brissett battled through a tight match for a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles, and Batoshvili pulled away at the end and earned a hard-fought 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles for the Athenas.

The Athenas are now 10-0 outdoors this season, and are 47-1 outdoors since the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The only defeat was last year in the regular season against Pomona-Pitzer, which the Athenas avenged in the SCIAC title match.

CMS will be back in action next Saturday, when it travels to Redlands for a SCIAC match in the morning, and then takes on Gustavus Adolphus in the afternoon at 4 p.m.
