First round win for women’s tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team made quick work of Chapman University in the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The No. 1 seed in the tournament faced little resistance as they cruised to the 5-0 victory on Friday afternoon.

The Panthers only traveled five players, instantly giving the Athenas two team points before the match started. Freshman Catherine Allen (SC) and senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) earned the 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, shortly followed by junior Kyla Scott (HMC) and freshman Madison Shea (CMC) winning by the same score.

All CMS needed was one win at singles to clinch the match and Kuosman was the first to deliver. The senior won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to advance the Athenas to the second round of the Championships.

Tomorrow, CMS will face Caltech at 9 a.m. at the University of Redlands. In order to beat the rain, the matches from Sunday were bumped up to Saturday afternoon so the Athenas will turn around and play again at 12 p.m. tomorrow as well.
