Women’s Tennis sweep to 2-0 start

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team got off to a strong start this season after sweeping Cal Lutheran 7-0 and Chapman 9-0 on Saturday afternoon.

"This Saturday was a great showing for us. The players shook out a few cobwebs in the beginning, but played well as their matches went on," Head Coach Dave Schwarz said. "We had the opportunity to play everyone. It [the results] shows that we're a pretty deep team and we have a lot of new talented players. It's encouraging going forward this season."

CMS 7, Cal Lutheran 0 - Results

The Athenas dominated through doubles, going 8-0 in all three of their matches. Junior Kyla Scott (HMC) and freshman Catherine Allen (SC) saw their singles matches cut short due to rain. Junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) battled through rust in her opening set, winning 6-3, but cruised through the second set 6-1 to win the match. Freshmen Ana Bryan-Ajania (SC) and Madison Shea (CMC) easily won their singles debut with a pair of 6-0 sweeps to secure the victory.

CMS 9, Chapman 0 - Results

The weather calmed down for the Athenas' second match of the afternoon as they managed to complete all their matches against Chapman. The Athenas rearranged their doubles pairings, but did not miss a beat as they swept all three of their matches. Coach Schwarz only retained senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) from the Cal Lutheran match as five different players had their first shot at singles. Sophomore Jessie Cruz (CMC) held it down at no. 1 singles, shaking off nerves in the first set to win 6-3 before comfortably cruising to a 6-0 victory to win her match.

Freshman Lauren Yamagami (CMC) swept Julie Williamson with a pair of 6-0 shutouts in the No. 6 singles matchup while her classmates Nicole Tan (CMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) performed spectacularly in their singles debut, dropping only two games combined.
