On to the SCIAC semifinals for CMS after win over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Rain showers were in the forecast and lightning delayed the match for 45 minutes. Nevertheless, the fourth-ranked and second-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team got in its match and defeated No. 7 seed Caltech 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the SCIAC Championships on May 6 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS is now 17-4 on the season. The Athenas play the winner of the match-up between No. 3 Redlands and No. 6 Chapman on Saturday, May 7 at 9:30 a.m. at Pomona-Pitzer's Pauley Tennis Complex.

Because of the potential for rain, Caltech and CMS flip-flopped doubles and singles and played the match to decision. CMS cruised to a 5-0 win with each of its five points coming in straight-set decisions in singles, so doubles matches were not played. In No. 5 and No. 6 singles, sophomore Lauren Livingston (CMC) and senior Samantha Eagle (SCR) both did not lose a game. Livingston defeated Cecelia Andrews in the fifth position while Eagle defeated Yeorgia Kafkoulis.

Sophomore Kyla Scott (HMC) won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and sophomore Bria Smith (CMC) took her match 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

In the closest match, junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) was leading Vinci Chen 6-3, 5-2 in No. 1 singles when the match ended, so Kuosman did not register a decision.
