Top-5 showdown goes to CMS, 6-3 over No. 4 Amherst

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Going back to 2001 (results not available prior to 2001), the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team had gone winless against Amherst in nine matches. That streak ended on March 16 as No. 5 CMS overcame a doubles deficit to defeat No. 4 Amherst 6-3 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, in what was a rematch of last season's third place match at the NCAA Championships.

After doubles Wednesday, CMS (8-1, 3-0 SCIAC) went down 2-1. Caroline Ward (CMC) and Katie Kuosman (CMC) earned the Athenas' first point at No. 1 doubles. They took a 5-0 lead initially and then had to rally back to ultimately take the match 8-5. No. 3 doubles finished next with Amherst pair Avery Wagman and Rebecca Pol beating sophomores Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Bria Smith (CMC) 8-6. The final doubles point came down to court No. 2 where Kyla Scott (HMC) and Jessie Cruz (CMC) traded leads with Kelsey Chen and Vickie Ip who took the battle 9-7.

The Athenas played very smart disciplined tennis in singles and it enabled them to make some great comebacks in several sets. Ward in No. 1 singles lost her first set but came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Each of CMS' remaining four points to clinch were all won in straight sets as No. 2 Kuosman (7-5, 6-3), No. 4 Scott (6-3, 6-4), No. 5 Cruz (6-4, 6-4) and No. 6 Smith (6-1, 7-5) each came away with wins.

Whitman (March 17) and Bowdoin (March 19) are the next two teams on the schedule for CMS, both matches at home.
