Strong win for No. 5 Athenas over No. 7 Carnegie Mellon

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team faced their toughest Division III competition yet this season with No. 7 Carnegie Mellon. The Athenas earned the 6-3 victory as No. 1 singles player Caroline Ward (CMC) clinched the team win with the 7-5, 6-4 victory.

After the doubles portion, CMS had the 2-1 lead. Ward and partner Katie Kuosman (CMC) made quick work of Carnegie Mellon's No. 1 pair Minami Makino and Cori Sidell 8-3 and then No. 3 doubles team of sophomores Bria Smith (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) won 8-5. The Tartans earned their only point in doubles with the Jaime Vizelman and Brooke Tsu beating Jessie Cruz (CMC) and Kyla Scott (HMC) 7-2 in the tie-breaker.

Cruz and Scott both bounced right back with the first two singles wins at No. 5 and No. 4, each getting stronger as the matches progressed (Cruz: 7-5, 6-1; Scott: 6-1, 6-1).

Carnegie Mellon nabbed two more points at No. 3 and No. 2 singles to bring the score to 4-3 in the match. Shortly thereafter, Ward clinched the match for the Athenas with a hard-earned 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Smith rounded out the Athenas' win with her 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6.

CMS is now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC. The Athenas host a handful of out of town teams – No. 4 Amherst, No. 25 Whitman and No. 8 Bowdoin – over Spring Break on March 16, 17, and 19.
