CMS wins fourth-straight SCIAC women's tennis title

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the fourth-straight season and 17th time overall, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team has been crowned as SCIAC champion. No. 1 seed CMS defeated No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 to win the championship.

CMS, 7 Pomona-Pitzer 2 (Championship Match)
CMS took No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman (No. 1 doubles) defeated Lea Lynn Yen and Grace Hruska 8-3 and Sarah Kukino and Kyla Scott (No. 2 doubles) took down Shivani Doraiswami and Emily Chen 8-4. While the top two spots were won with relative ease by CMS, No. 3 doubles was won by Pomona-Pitzer in a very closely contested match. Pomona-Pitzer's No. 3 doubles team of Maryann Zhao and Maddie Gordon won 9-8 (8-6) over Lindsay Brown and Lauren Livingston, despite being ahead 6-3 in the match early on. CMS' duo tied it up on several occasions to force the tiebreaker.

In singles, CMS took matches in the first five spots as Ward (6-4, 6-1), Kuosman (6-2, 6-3), Kukino (7-6, 2-6, 6-0), Brown (6-4, 7-6) and Scott (4-6, 6-4, 6-0) all got wins. Pomona-Pitzer's lone singles win came in the sixth position as Chen won 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Redlands 5, La Verne 4 (3rd Place Match)
Third-seeded La Verne put itself at an early advantage by moving ahead 2-1 after doubles over No. 4 seed Redlands. Lauren Torres and Shenelle Trujillo won their match decisively, 8-1, over Gabriela Vasquez and Maddie Morton in No. 3 doubles. La Verne's top doubles team also put  a point on the board, as Laina Matsuda and Bridget Etchegaray defeated Natalie Etchegaray and Ceara Sumida, 8-5. Redlands took No. 2 doubles in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4) as Julia Pollak and Lauren Villanueva combined to form the winning team for Redlands.

The bottom of Redlands' lineup carried them in singles as the 4-6 players earned wins. Emily Murnin had the match-clinching win No. 4 singles, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Matsuda (6-2, 6-1) and Etchegaray (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) got the singles wins for La Verne.

Chapman 6, Cal Lutheran 3 (5th Place Match)
In the fifth place game Chapman defeated Cal Lutheran 6-3.  Chapman started out with a 2-1 lead after doubles with two impressive wins in No. 1 and No.2 doubles. Chapman scored their first point of the match in No. 2 doubles where Maddie Saunders and Sophia Duong defeated Shelby Kubota and Mallory Kenny of Cal Lutheran 8-4. Chapman finished doubles with a win in No. 3 doubles where Lauren Ross and Sara McDonald defeated Rebecca Gold and Sarah Baker of Cal Lutheran with a score of 8-4.

In singles play Chapman came out strong as Sophia Duong defeated Mallory Kenny (6-3, 6-1) in No. 1 singles and Lauren Ross defeated Shelby Kubota of Cal Lutheran (6-2, 6-4) in No. 5 singles. Cal Lutheran answered with their second point of the match as Rebecca Gold defeated Rachel Fox of Chapman (6-3, 6-7, 8-6) in No. 2 singles.  Chapman secured their victory with a win in No. 3 singles where Andrea Hammer defeated Emily Werman of Cal Lu (6-2, 2-6, 6-1). With the win Chapman takes fifth place in the SCIAC Championships while Cal Lutheran finishes in 6th place.


Whittier 8,
Occidental 1 (7th Place Match)
In the seventh place game Whittier defeated Occidental 8-1.  Whittier started strong as they won all three doubles matches with the strongest coming in No. 2 doubles as Amber Weintraub and Ruthie Kaplan defeated Samantha Farrell and Keilani Bonis-Erikcson of Occidental 8-0. 

In singles play Occidental won their only match of the day in impressive fashion as Sara Carney defeated Alissa Fa in No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0). Whittier clinched their seventh place finish in the SCIAC Championships with a win in No. 1 singles where Meagan Zamilpa defeated Samantha Farrell of Occidental 6-1, 6-0.  Whittier finishes in seventh place and Occidental finishes in eighth place in the SCIAC Championships.
