Sixth Street rivals to face off in title match of SCIAC Women’s Tennis Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The final slate of matches for the 2015 SCIAC Women’s Tennis Championships are set and top-seed CMS advanced to the championship match against No. 2 seed Pomona-Pitzer on May 2. In eight matches on Friday, seeding stayed true as all of the higher seeded teams won their respective matches. Final round matches are set to begin on May 2 at 10 a.m. with the first and third place matches at CMS and the fifth and seventh place matches at Pomona-Pitzer.

FIRST ROUND
In match one, top-seeded CMS took care of business quickly, defeating No. 8 Occidental 5-0 in a match played to decision. In doubles, CMS took all three matches, winning two of the matches by an 8-0 score in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. In singles, Bria Smith won 6-0, 6-0 over Amber Gadsden. Nithya Menon closed out the win in No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Isabella Korfmann.

In match two, No. 4 Redlands defeated No. 5 Chapman 5-2.  Redlands finished doubles with a 2-1 lead after a strong performance from No. 3 doubles Gabby Vasquez and Maddie Morton defeated Lauren Ross and Sara McDonald of Chapman 8-2.  Redlands then clinched the win at No. 4 singles as Emily Murnin of Redlands defeated Maddie Saunders (4-6, 6-2, 6-2).

In match three, No. 3 La Verne defeated No. 6 Cal Lutheran 5-1. La Verne jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles with Andrea Madrigal and Jane Chinn defeating Annette Sousa and Emily Werman 8-5 of Cal Lutheran in No. 2 doubles for the La Verne’s second point.  La Verne swept the next three matches with Bridget Etchegaray of La Verne defeating Werman of Cal Lutheran (6-4,6-2) in No. 3 singles to seal the win for La Verne. 

The other first round match at CMS’ Biszantz Family Tennis Center, No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer defeated No. 7 Whittier College 5-0. Pomona-Pitzer led 3-0 after doubles highlighted by an 8-0 win in No. 2 doubles by Emily Chen and Shivani Doraiswami. The bottom portion of Pomona-Pitzer’s lineup carried them in with wins in No. 5 singles by Emily Kuo (6-0, 6-4) and in No. 6 singles by Emily Chen (6-0, 6-0).

SECOND ROUND
Just as was the case in its first match of the day, CMS didn’t lose a point against No. 4 Redlands, winning 9-0. In doubles, CMS took two matches by a score of 8-3 (No. 2 and No. 3) and No. 1 doubles. The No. 4-6 positions for CMS all won without losing a game.

The other semifinal saw Pomona-Pitzer defeat La Verne 9-0. The closest doubles match came in the No. 3 position as Maryann Zhao and Maddie Gordon won 8-4 over Lauren Torres and Shenelle Trujillo. Emily Chen had the clinching win, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles over Areli Martinez.

In match seven, Chapman defeated Occidental 7-2. Chapman swept doubles play 3-0 including a shutout in No. 2 doubles where Sophia Duong and Madeline Saunders defeated Isabella Korfmann and Lucy Malloch. Chapman secured their win when Andrea Hammer defeated Amber Gadsden (6-1,6-2) in No. 3 singles. Chapman advances to play in the fifth place game against Cal Lutheran at the Pomona-Pitzer Tennis Complex at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Occidental will play Whittier in the seventh place game at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Tennis Complex.

In match eight of the day, Cal Lutheran defeated Whittier 5-4. Cal Lu jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play behind great play in No. 3 doubles where Rebecca Gold and Sarah Baker defeated Jada Henry and Alissa Fa of Whittier 8-2. Whittier secured their win in No. 2 doubles where Rebecca Gold defeated Benay Weintraub (6-2, 7-5). Cal Lutheran moves on to play Chapman in the fifth place match at 10 a.m. at the Pomona-Pitzer Tennis Complex on Saturday. Whittier will play Occidental in the seventh place game at 10 a.m. at the Pomona-Pitzer Tennis Complex on Saturday.
