No. 5 CMS returns to action, takes down Bates and Point Loma

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After over two weeks off from competition, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team hit the courts on Feb. 21 for a home doubleheader against Bates and Point Loma at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS won both matches, defeating Bates 8-1 in the morning match and Point Loma 7-2 in the final match of the day. CMS is now 3-0 on the season.

CMS 8, Bates 1

The Athenas made quick work of Bates in doubles action, taking all three matches with the narrowest margin of victory being 8-4 in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The doubles team of freshmen Lauren Livingston (CMC) and Samantha Nuno (SCR) earned their first collegiate doubles victory of the regular season as a pair and scored the first team point of the match for CMS in doubles, finishing first with an 8-3 win. In singles play, CMS nearly swept all six points, winning singles matches in the second through sixth position. In a scenario that will have to occur all season long for CMS to be successful, three freshmen (Livingston, Bria Smith (CMC) and Kyla Scott (HMC)) all registered singles wins for CMS.

The lone point for Bates in the morning match came in No. 1 singles as Elena Mandzhukova outlasted Caroline Ward (CMC) 7-6, 2-6, 14-12. With the overall match already decided, the third set between Ward and Mandzhukova was played the first to 10 points rather than the usual first to win six games.
