D-II Cal State L.A. taken down by No. 5 CMS in 2015 opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A year after losing to NCAA Division II Cal State Los Angeles 5-4, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team bounced back with a decisive 8-1 win over Cal State L.A. in the 2015 opener for CMS, on Feb. 6 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

CMS swept doubles play and then took five of six singles points to get the win, with the lone point for Cal State L.A. coming in No. 5 singles.

At the top of the doubles lineup, CMS mainstays Caroline Ward (CMC) and Katie Kuosman (CMC) earned the first point of the match with an 8-1 win over Sonia Landeros and Elizaveta Sokolova. Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Bria Smith (CMC) also tallied an 8-1 win from the Athenas over the Golden Eagles in No. 3 doubles. While CMS cruised to easy wins in the first and third doubles positions, the No. 2 doubles match-up proved to be much more difficult, as Sarah Kukino (CMC) and Kyla Scott (HMC) won in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5) over Nozomi Matsuoka and Alexandra Makashov.

In each of the five singles points that CMS won, the match went just two sets as Ward, Kukino, Kuosman, Brown and Smith all took their respective matches.

CMS now has two-plus week stretch without an official match, next hosting Bates and Point Loma on Feb. 21.

  4. Brown (CMS) defeats Vo (CSULA) 6-1, 6-2
  5. Makashov (CSULA) defeats Scott (CMS) 7-5, 6-3
  6. Smith (CMS) defeats Ivanovic (CSULA) 6-0, 6-1
