Doubles run concludes for Ward and Kuosman in NCAA finals with second place finish

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A group of 32 athletes and 16 doubles teams began the week with hopes of making it to the finals of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Doubles Championships which were held on May 24 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Freshman Katie Kuosman and sophomore Caroline Ward of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps did just that, becoming finalists at the 2014 D-III Women's Doubles Championships, the second year in a row for Ward who made it in 2013 with partner Kristin Lim.

On Saturday, the duo won their semifinal match in the morning 6-3, 7-5 over Pomona-Pitzer's Samantha Chao and Lea Lynn Yen. Ward and Kuosman also defeated Chao and Yen in the third round of the NCAA Team Championships on May 11.

The win over Pomona-Pitzer's doubles team set up an afternoon match-up with Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin from Amherst who had already won two national championships together in doubles during their career. The seniors from Amherst added another national championship to their belt on Saturday as they defeated Ward and Kuosman 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

CMS started out strong against Brewer and Devlin, winning the first set convincingly, 6-2. Brewer and Devlin then evened the match, winning the second set 6-3. In the third set, CMS took the first game but Devlin and Brewer won six-straight games to close out the win.
