Host Athenas represented in ITA West Region doubles and singles finals
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's
tennis team had representatives in both the singles and doubles
main draw finals of the USTA/ITA Small College West Regional
Championships over the weekend at the Biszantz Family Tennis
Center. Freshman No. 9 seed Katie Kousman made the
singles finals for CMS while the No. 2 seeded doubles team of
sophomore Caroline Ward and senior Crystal
Lim made the doubles finals.
Kousman won five matches en route to the singles final with wins
over three individuals who were seeded higher than her. Kousman
topped No. 7 seed Jeanette Losaria of La Verne (6-3, 6-2) in the
round of 16, No. 4 seed Natalie Etchegaray of Redlands (5-7, 6-2,
6-2) in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Maegan Zamilpa of Whittier
(5-7, 6-3, 6-3) in the semifinals before losing in the finals to
No. 2 seed Andrea Madrigal of La Verne (6-3, 6-4).
All told, the Athenas had five representatives (Kousman, Ward,
senior Chloe Dobert, senior Crystal
Lim and junior Sarah Kukino) in the Round
of 16 in the singles main draw. Ward, the No. 5 seed in singles
made it all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to the
eventual champion, Madrigal, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles play, the second-seeded team of Ward and Lim won four
matches on the way to the finals with wins over doubles teams from
Whittier, La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer. In the finals, the No. 3
seeded team of Samantha Chao and Lea Lynn Yen from Pomona-Pitzer
defeated Ward and Lim in tiebreaker sets 7-6 (3), 7-6 (7). CMS had
two doubles teams reach at least the quarterfinals. While Lim and
Ward advanced through the quarterfinals and into the finals, the
doubles team of Kousman and Kukino made the quarterfinals, but lost
8-2 to top-seeded Jessica Ly and Natalie Etchegaray of
Redlands.
