Athenas Move Into NCAA Quarterfinals With Win Over Pomona-Pitzer

The No. 2 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated Pomona-Pitzer 5-3 in the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. With the win, CMS advances to the Division III Quarterfinals May 20 in Kalamazoo, Mich. against the University of Chicago.

In doubles, CMS took a 1-0 lead as Kristin Lim and Caroline Ward defeated Sammy Chao and Kara Wang 8-2 in No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 doubles team of Arthi Padmanabhan and Lea Lynn Yen of Pomona-Pitzer evened the score at 1-1 with a 8-5 win over Chloe Dobbert and Yvonne Likomanova. The tighest doubles match came in No. 2 doubles as the Pomona-Pitzer duo of Samantha Mae Coyiuto and Jamie Solomon won 9-7 over Sarah Kukino and Crystal Lim, after trailing 7-4.

CMS won the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches while Pomona-Pitzer took No. 6. Kristin Lim won the No. 1 singles match over Solomon 6-0, 6-1. Dobbert defeated Yen 6-2, 6-3 in No. 5 singles to give CMS a 3-2 lead. Kukino followed with a 6-4, 7-5 win in No. 4 singles over Fleming. In No. 6 singles, Padmanabhan got Pomona-Pitzer a point with a 6-1, 8-6 win over Likomanova to get Pomona-Pitzer within a point at 4-3. Minutes later, Ward ended the match for CMS with a 6-4, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles.

Pomona-Pitzer ends its season at 15-7 while CMS moves to 30-0.
