SCIAC Championship Caps Off Undefeated Run Through Conference For Athenas
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team won three matches over the two day SCIAC Women's Tennis Championships including a 7-2 win over No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer in the finals on Saturday morning at Pauley Tennis Complex. The Athenas jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles and then won five of six singles matches to capture the SCIAC Championship.
The No. 1 doubles team of senior Kristin Lim and freshman Caroline Ward defeated Sammy Chao and Kara Wang 8-4. Junior Crystal Lim and sophomore Sarah Kukino then topped Marie Fleming and Jamie Solomon in a tiebreaker 8-7 (3). The Sagehens got a point at No. 3 doubles as Arthi Padmanabhan and Lea Lyn defeated junior Chloe Dobbert and freshman Yvonne Likomanova 8-2.
In singles, CMS took the first four matches as Kristin Lim (6-3, 6-3), Ward (6-4, 6-1), Crystal Lim (6-4, 6-1) and Kukino (6-1, 6-2) all got wins in the first through fourth positions, respectively. Likomanova got a 6-4, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles.
Next up for the Athenas is the NCAA Division III West Regionals May 10-11. NCAA selections will be announced on Monday, with likely six teams earning bids to the NCAA West Regional, with the top two seeds getting byes.
