Qualifiers announced for Diving Regionals, NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee announced on Feb. 24 the participants in the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The championships will be held March 16-19 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference will serve as the host. A total of 527 participants (479 swimmers and 48 divers) will compete in the championships. Six Stags swimmers and two Athenas swimmers are the participants from CMS. CMS also has two divers (one Athena and one Stag) who qualified for diving regionals.

Student-athletes qualified for the swimming portion of the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered.

The Stags qualified in four of the five relays (200 free, 400 free, 200 medley, 400 medley) and will also compete in the 800 free relay as an additional swim. In addition to competing in the relays, five of the six Stags who qualified are also competing in several individual events: junior Matthew Williams (CMC – 100 fly, 100 back, 200 back), senior Alex Poltash (CMC – 50 free, 100 free, 200 free), sophomore Noah Deer (CMC – 50 free, 100 free, 200 free), senior Matthew Valentine (HMC – 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM) and senior Zach Alleva (CMC – 100 breaststroke). Alleva earned a 'B' cut time in the breaststroke but gets to compete at nationals because he is also competing in relays. An athlete who qualifies for nationals on a relay team gets to swim in any event at nationals that they swam a 'B' cut time in during the course of the season. Senior Joseph Hinton (CMC) is heading to nationals as well as a relay team member.

A pair of juniors for the Athenas received the invite to nationals: Kelly Ngo (CMC – 50 free, 100 free, 200 free) and Stephanie Doi (CMC – 200 IM, 100 fly, 200 fly).

Divers attending nationals will be determined by performances achieved at the regional diving meets Feb. 26-27. For CMS, diving regionals are at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Junior Carli Lessard (HMC) is representing the Athenas at regionals in both dives and sophomore Patrick Quarberg (CMC) is representing the Stags in both dives. Sophomore men's diver Victor Ginelli (CMC) also qualified but is not attending due to injury.

The complete list of all swimmers competing in the championships is available at www.usaswimming.org/ncaa. Selected divers for nationals will be added to the website Monday, Feb. 29, after the completion of diving regionals.
