CMS Opens At UC San Diego

The CMS swimming and diving team opened its season on Saturday, October 27 with a dual meet at UC San Diego.  The NCAA Division II power Tritons topped the Athenas by a score of 256 to 44 and the Stags 234 to 66.

While CMS posted several stellar swims, event victories were tough to come by.  The Athenas were led by senior diver Carmen Lundell, who nabbed a victory in the 3-meter diving competition by 0.45 points with a score of 244.95.  For the Stags, freshman Joey Hinton established his sprint credentials by winning the 100 free with a time of 47.33.

Runner up finishes were snagged by Cameron Whting in the 200 yard freestyle, Tim Storer in the 100 backstroke, Matt Valentine in the 200 fly, Carmen Lundell in 1-meter diving, James Stevick on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, and Marc Blumberg in the 100 fly.

The Stags notched several new marks on the CMS All Time Top 10 performance list.  Sophomore Alex Mendoza established the 6th fastest time in CMS history with his third place finish in the 1000 free with a 9:48.42.  Matt Valentine earned the 9th time on the Stag top 10 list with a 1:54.24 in the 200 fly.  Freshman Joey Hinton sprinted to a blistering 20.41 split in the 50 free while anchoring the CMS A 200 medley relay.

With Homecoming weekend approaching, the CMS swimmers and divers look forward to the annual alumni relay meet on Saturday, November 3 at 11:00 am.  CMS's next collegiate competition will be at the Bulldog Pentathlon on November 10 at the University of Redlands.
